Expert Elicitation

Expert elicitation gathers informed judgments from specialists to address environmental and economic issues where data may be scarce or uncertain.

Adan’s first approximation to Expert Elicitation in 2014 involved gathering agronomists’ expectations of climate change impacts on potato yields in specific communities located in the Bolivian Altiplano.

This manuscript documents ongoing conversations between Expert Elicitation, where experts provide judgments on specific topics, and Stated Preferences Valuation, which uses surveys to determine people's preferences for goods and services, particularly environmental ones. Expert Elicitation can improve Stated Preferences Valuation by helping link scientific data to public perception, while Stated Preferences Valuation can provide valuable insights for Expert Elicitation by suggesting new ways to gather expert opinions. The document highlights several research areas where this interdisciplinary conversation is particularly promising, such as estimating the value of improvements in environmental conditions and using expert-informed priors in Bayesian models. The document concludes that combining these two research fields allows for a more comprehensive and effective approach to understanding and valuing environmental goods and services.
